WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases item level by +3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless it is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrades upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of armor or weapons. However, the item upgrades used for the upgrade will be consumed forever and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current it is recommended you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item, however, they are always cheaper than buying new equipment. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item upgrades will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. Players can purchase them through NPCs who sell upgrades to item level upgrade owners for a variety of currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display the item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot of the item and the current item level. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item upgrading has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currency types.

Many locations have upgraders for their items which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of getting the latest recipe. The upgrade discount increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only accessible through a variety of methods. This is both a positive and an issue.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was altered a bit, with several new features added. Once the player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This is even if the items come from a different set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is account-wide. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players have reached certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a couple of options. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

First, you should know that the crests can only be purchased for gear with a certain rank. Each rank has an upgrade path that is different. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, based on the type or gear being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons with any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons for endgame gear. These crests are then exchanged with an upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.

The use of these currencies isn't too difficult, but the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. For example, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all of their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one usage, so it's important to use them wisely. For instance it's a good idea to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrader gear you have available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to create. This is particularly true for items like rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to benefit from the account-wide discount when all of the slots are filled with top-quality gear.
